Partick Thistle 0-0 Dundee: All we are saying...

By Iain Hepburn on Oct 6, 08 08:27 AM in

You know one of those weekends where everything that can go wrong, does?

I had one of those. About the only bright spot over the course of the two days was Thistle not getting beat. Although given how turgid a performance this was, that's bright in a relative sense.

The guy sitting behind me summed it up perfectly. 'We could play for four days like this and not score a goal'.

Ian McCall pointed out in his programme notes that our strikers weren't actually scoring goals, which only helped hammer home how powder puff our attack is at the moment.

Sid's trying his best, god bless him, but he's in his 30s and not a one man band - trying to orchestrate attack, midfield and bridge between the both is too much, even for him.

Gray's nowhere to be seen while Stephen 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Lennon hasn't quite mastered the art of running and striking at the same time, it would seem. The boy can run all day, but he's not got anywhere near the killer touch we need at this level.

There's a lot of hope that it is temporary, this malaise will lift at Firhill, the second Liam Buchananananan returns to the first team. But he's been out for months, isn't match sharp and needs time to find his feet again.

At the other end of the park we've nothing to worry about. So much so, in fact, that it's a mystery where Archie fits into the defence once he's back to full fitness. Twaddle's done enough to show he's first choice for left back, while Maxy and Robertson are our So Solid Crew at the back. Storey's a possible weak link, but he provides better attacking options than Archie.

Realistically it looks like Paul Paton would be the big loser here, with Archie sitting left side of the back three, and Storey moving to right back. Which would be a shame for Paton - yes he looks ineffectual at times (Saturday being a case in point) but that's because so much distribution of our game goes down the left channel. Once play is switched, he bombs forward and beats men easily.

There weren't many positives to take from Saturday's no-score bore against Dundee, other than smugly enjoying their continued downfall (karma's a bitch, Mr Marr...) but with a cup semi-final and the return of the cameras this weekend (albeit for the Outer Hebrides Broadcasting Corporation), and a league opening up to become more competitive by the week, I'll avoid complaining for now.
